Members of AFSCME Local 127,

Congratulations to all who received a Special Salary Adjustment (SSA)!

This is a massive victory for the employees of the 49 job classifications – representing nearly one quarter of all job classifications of Local 127 – for Local 127 as a bargaining unit, and for AFSCME as a formidable institution. Notably, these SSAs occurred during an off, or non-negotiating, Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) year, which is both atypical and impressive.

Led by Tim Douglass, Acting President, and Andres Alva-Cardenas, Business Representative, Local 127 fought tirelessly to achieve these well-deserved and overdue salary increases. To attain these increases, Tim and Andres collaborated with the Members of these classifications to learn the subject matter of their positions and to elicit their invaluable feedback and input. Moreover, Tim and Andres lobbied to earn the support of the Management of various Departments, of Councilmembers, and of Mayor Todd Gloria by expressing the necessity of these increases and by finding reasonable compromise.

For those who did not receive an SSA this time, be encouraged. There is plenty of opportunity to receive an SSA soon. Specifically, the next SSA applications are due this June; thus, if you are interested in receiving an SSA or if you believe your job classification warrants an SSA because of a significant change in job duties, among other reasons, then begin this process now. Build your SSA with written descriptions and photos evidencing your daily work for you are the subject matter expert of your classification, so compile this evidence, speak with your management, and reach out to Local 127.

Again, congratulations to those who received an SSA!

Thank you,
